Sounds harsh doesn't it? This world cup... the worst ever... even worse than 1994 and the awful Diana Ross moment and the flat steep sided grounds used to NFL football. Well.... yes, and here are 12 reasons why.
1. Lack of a flair Brazil side. They may not always win it, but watching a Brazil side with their flair and adventure makes a world cup. This time.... what happened? They qualified pretty easily but their passing was slow, they looked regimented and that something special just wasn't there was it?
2. Vuvu's.... no more more words needed than just annoying.
3. Lack of a decent television world cup theme tune. Remember Aztec Gold for Mexico 86, remember Nessun Dorma for Italia 90, remember the Faithless futuristic melody for Japan/Korea 2002.... this year..... hmm, point proven... bad year for the theme tunes!
4. A 99p floater for a football. What's the point in bringing the worlds talent of football for an international event and then using something which whizzes al over the place like one of those plastic garish coloured footballs you get by the seaside. Not helped at all!
5. An unappreciative audience. Don't get me wrong, what a spectacle it must have been for the Africans. But South Africa have cricket and rugby well ahead of football in their pecking order. The noisy horns killed the atmosphere, switched off millions and created an embarrassing memory for this tournament.
6. Lack of legacy. What's going to happen now? Empty massive stadia? Or are rugby clubs going to take them on? Why have a country with little club infrastructure in place to utilise the massive rebuilding programmes? Will these grounds all be knocked down now and in years to come?
7. Woeful commentators. In years gone by we had Motson, Davies, Moore. Now Tyldesley aside (and even his varying pronunciation on Asamoah of Ghana was greatly annoying).... what do we have? Jonathan Pierce.... oh dear god is that all we can muster!!!???
8. Poor games. One or two moderately decent ones. But where have the classics been? But then with background noise, a ball that defies convention and average sides.... i guess that might have been asking too much.
9. A modern game without a modern approach. Technology. The goal for Argentina against Mexico. Frank Lampards shot that crossed the line by miles. Should that still be happening in 2010?
10. Players saving themselves for their clubs. Kaka.... Messi.... Ronaldo... Rooney... Van Persie.... Torres.... Henry... Ribery... and so many so called quality players that have looked average. Where have they all been.
11. Goals... or lack of. Maybe one of my most abiding memories was the Mexico world cup in 86. Some stunning thunderbolts... 35 yard exocet missiles taking the netting out. How many wondergoals have there been this year? Tevez maybe against Mexico? and South Africa's opener? But it seems anything hit from distance has ballooned in the air. Not good when you want excitement and drama.
12. Finally.... a poorly performing England team. Poor all the way through. And at least when we haven't been at a world cup you have less to moan about! But this time for all the supposed quality. Poor management, poor tactics, poor selection and lack of desire and passion from the "golden generation" who must clearly have been dubbed that for the extreme levels of money they've taken from the game!
So thank you South Africa for trying... but good riddance when the curtain falls on this embarrassment of a tournament.
