No Chelsea this year

For anyone who's never been to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show... in a way you're not missing anything, and are actually avoiding a great deal too.

But there's something in me that really enjoys it.

Ok the downsides.  The smug gits trying to look knowledgeable about things they clearly don't... even worse if they are in BBC frame with the Titchmarsh!

The heat (if it's hot)... all those people.... it gets a bit sweaty!

The cold/ wet... speaks for itself weather depending!

The hoi poloi.... the wealthy former bankers, linen jacket, panama, ex banker ish types with two legs of mutton on their arm who barge and think they are better than everyone else.

And the old ladies, womens institute type who have sharper elbows than any hand back sales snatcher!

So why do i like it?  There's a serenity amongst the chaos.  There are beautiful glimpses of englishness.  The more polite, the majority of the visitors, moving aside when they've had enough time to see the exhibits.  Moving aside to ensure you get a good picture.  Consideration for those who are more elderly or in a wheelchair.

Then you consider the achievement.  Thousands of flowers, tonnes of earth and soil and brick, slate, metal, wood making creations that if you wandered by just a few weeks later would show no signs of being there.  Anybody who didn't know the Chelsea Flower Show existed would have no inkling the site was it's home in any other month but May.

The smells the sights, the quality, the britishness, the poiliteness.... it's a quintessential part of our green little land.... and you know.... i think i'll get my finger out and make sure i'm there when the doors open in 2011... til then..... so Alan.... tell me about that curious little aquilegia...
